FAIRMONT–Jay Clips is a new barbershop in Fairmont owned by master barber Justin Keodouangdy. The shop, located at 113 West Blue Earth Ave., offers services to men with all different hair types.

Keodouangdy grew up outside of Minnesota but has been in the area for the last decade.

“I learned how to cut hair by cutting my own hair,” Keodouangdy said.

He pursued it as a career and obtained his master barber license in 2016 from Minnesota School of Barbering. Keodouangdy said he likes what he does because it allows him to make people look and feel good. He also appreciates the creativity that barbering lends.

“I enjoy them coming to me and saying I can do whatever I think will look good and they end up loving it. That makes me feel good,” Keodouangdy said.

He said where he worked previously, they didn’t care as much about quality cuts, but the amount of cuts he was giving. Having his own shop allows Keodouangdy to focus on his clients the way he wants to.

Several years ago he actually opened his own shop in Dunnell, Kutt’n Up Kutz, but Covid hit soon after that and shut it down. In his second go-around, he explained why he chose the Fairmont area for his shop.

“When I was working in Mankato as a barber, there was a lot of people that came from this area and I thought if I put one in Fairmont, people wouldn’t have to drive. I thought why not be a barber here,” Keodouangdy said.

He moved into the space in December 2021 but has been working on cleaning it up and getting the needed equipment installed.

Jay Clips offers lot of different styles including fades and pompadours.

“A lot of people want their edges up clean and the blends to have a smooth transition,” Keodouangdy said.

As a barbershop, Keodouangdy specializes in boy’s and men’s cuts but said he can also cut women’s short styles.

“I can do pretty much whatever they request. If they show a picture I can try to bring the vision to life,” Keodouangdy said.

He also offers a straight razor shave and hot towel shave, which are hard to come by at many salons.

“I want people to know that I cut all types of ethnic hair. You need someone who knows how to cut those different hair textures,” Keodouangdy explained.

He said walk-ins are welcome but encourages people to book online at jayclips.com. The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday but Keodouangdy said he is open to changing his hours depending on what works best for his clients.

While he’s a one man shop right now, Keodouangdy said he’s willing to have someone who’s interested in barbering come on as an apprentice.

“Maybe I can open doors for someone who wants to do this,” he said.
