Everyone knows that durable gear is essential if you spend any time outdoors. But the laundry list of choices makes it hard to decide what gear is actually up for the task, and what you can leave behind for easygoing adventures.

Last year, we spent some time with VSSL, a Canadian brand building durable, sensible gear for the outdoors that’s up for rugged antics. And its latest release, dubbed the Essentials Collection, embraces small-but-mighty gear kits that contain the basics you need to enjoy the outdoors.

Housed in the same waterproof, virtually indestructible, aircraft-grade aluminum vessels we’ve come to expect from VSSL, the latest collection features four multi-use kits designed for different tasks. Take a look at each one in greater detail below, and save 10% on your next order when you sign up for emails from VSSL through their website.

Complete with a slew of versatile backcountry essentials that include a razor blade, wire saw, paracord and a compass end cap, the Ready Kit contains only the essential gear you need to build a shelter, repair equipment, navigate and stay safe when the going gets a little tough.

When your equipment fails in the field (and if it hasn’t yet, someday it will), break out the Fix Kit which contains repair tape, zip ties, a sewing kit and more to MacGyver your way out of any sticky situation.

As its name implies, the Catch and Cook Kit is overflowing with angling essentials and fire-building necessities to sustain yourself in the wild. Inside, you’ll find a dedicated fishing tackle tin filled with rubber worms, hooks and line, as well as a wire saw and fire striker to get the campfire going in time for grub.

While the four-mode LED flashlight is the main feature of the Light Kit, you’ll also find a roll of multipurpose adventure tape, bamboo cloths for hygiene or fire starters, and a spare tin to store other random essentials.
